Located in the heart of Greenville, New York, the Northeast USA Vietnam Veterans Fund Memorial stands as a solemn tribute to 17 fallen heroes from Greene County who gave their lives in the Vietnam War. Located in the Greenville Veterans Memorial Park, this powerful monument was envisioned and brought to life by members of the Northeast USA Vietnam Veterans Reunion Association—many of whom served in Vietnam themselves.
The memorial features a striking bronze Battlefield Cross, a symbolic arrangement of a soldier’s boots, rifle, helmet, and dog tags, traditionally used in combat zones to honor the fallen. Surrounding it are etched granite slabs bearing the names of the 17 local service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. An 80-foot flagpole rises above the site, flanked by additional flagpoles, creating a dignified and patriotic setting.
More than just a monument, this site is a place of remembrance, reflection, and healing. It honors not only those who died but also the enduring spirit of Vietnam veterans who, despite the hardships they faced upon returning home, never gave up on their mission to ensure their brothers in arms are remembered with honor and gratitude
In 2022, members of the Northeast USA Vietnam Veterans Reunion Association launched an effort to commemorate 17 fallen soldiers with ties to Greene County, NY communities.
Bernard Malone, Tim Broder Sr. and James Sill, all of whom are members of the Reunion Association, led the Northeast USA Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund project to build a “Battle Cross” monument in Greenville, NY.
The group succeeded in raising more than $100,000 for the monument, including a “Battle Cross”, composed of a bronze replica of items a service member has in the field of battle — boots, a rifle, dog tags and a helmet — presented in the shape of a cross. That design reflects what most units did to commemorate fallen soldiers during memorial ceremonies in the South Vietnam combat zone.
The monument itself consists of a center piece of a Bronze Battle Cross, flanked on both sides with mirror finish black granite slabs containing
the names of 17 soldiers who were killed in action in Vietnam. The monument also has an illuminated 80 foot tall bronze satin finish flagpole with a large American flag.
The monument was dedicated on September 17, 2022 and is located in Veterans Memorial Park, Routes 81 and 32 in the Town of Greenville. See photos below.
